Fireworks display spectacular but 2012 Olympic closing ceremony not quite

The fireworks display at the closing  of the 2012 Olympics was spectacular although the ceremony  itself left a lot to be desired.Where was that familiar comedic element we saw at the opening ceremony?

.
The selection of music was interesting and energetic at times. The idea for the torch was genius and beautiful. The formations were very creative. One of which was the formation of John Lennon's  image while the song "imagine'' was being played

There could have been a common theme and better transitioning between performances as was seen in the opening ceremony . Having a common theme for any group performance makes it easier for the audience to understand what your focus is. This is particularly important for onlooking nations who maybe, are not familar with your culture.

George Micheal  Taio Cruz, Jessie J and Tinie Tempah did a fantastic job of  waking a few people with more upbeat music.

The highlight was seeing the spice girls perform two of my favourites "If you wanna be my lover." and "Spice up your life"

Although it may have been exciting to keep everyone in suspense as to what was happening next a commentator would have been appreciated.

The Beijing Olympics was unique and memorable even though they may not have had as many internationally renowned stars.

So the question is what makes a closing ceremony great.

Select the main highlights of your culture.  Take the main highlights of your culture and create a common theme.  Then make it spectacular and entertaining.

Do not get carried away with all the pomp and splendor or else your audience will loose focus. You dont have to do almost 30 performances jumbled together for your viewers to realize you are great and have a lot to offer.

Now we look forward to Brazil .

The introductory peace at the end in the handover ceremony was very entertaining.  The costumes and the music gave a glimpse into what to expect in 2016. Hopefully that same creativity would be seen in their opening ceremony.
