7 TIPS TO SLEEP BETTER

7 TIPS TO SLEEP BETTER

  • GET A GOOD MATTRESS

When buying a mattress focus more on quality rather than quantity. Having a more expensive or top rated mattress doesn't mean it is right for you. There are sensitive blood vessels and capillaries running along your back therefore having a mattress that supports you is most important. If you suffer with back pain, search for a mattress that is not too hard or too soft. If you sit at an office desk all day this also might be a best choice. Ensure that when you lie down you are not sinking as this puts pressure on your neck, shoulders and lower back.

  • EXERCISE

I am not saying to go RUN A MARATHON BUT IF YOU JOB REQUIRES YOU TO BE at a desk all day you may need to have an exercise regiment that suits you. If you have a health condition make sure to consult with your doctor. Exercise should not be forced or mandatory. It should be enjoyable. Take a walk or jog in a park, do stretches in the morning and in the afternoon or spend 5 minutes on the treadmill AS SIMPLE AS THAT. Exercise takes your mind away from daily stress and problems. TRUST ME YOU WILL SLEEP BETTER AND FEEL BETTER.

  • CHANGE YOUR POSITION

Each person has a favourite sleeping position.
Some sleep on their back
Some sleep on their side
Some sleep with their legs or hands crossed.

Sleeping positions reveal a lot about a person for example, sleeping under the sheets may indicate you feel overwhelmed and need your space . The 'lovers hug as it is called" is described as where the man is on his back and the woman's head is on his shoulder with his arm around her. This indicates how much that person cares and is protective of you.

Changing your position could also help with breathing problems . Sleeping in an upright position has helped people with sleep apnea to breathe better.

  • REGULATE YOUR SLEEP HOURS

If you are a student like me this may be difficult. If you are able to have set times for sleep, maintain it. If you have to study late at night have set times for study after a while the sleep regulators in your  brain would become adjusted to the new system. For the first week you may wake up tired but eventually you will feel as though you had a full night rest.

  • USE A PILLOW

My cousing would often complain of back pains but it was only when she stayed overnight I realised why. She would sleep without any head support . Her spine would not be aligned or elevated in a proper position as a result she would toss,  turn and not TO MENTION SNORE!

A pillow suited to your comfort level can be used not only for elevation. It can also be used to support other parts of your body while you sleep.
Placing  pillow between your legs adds support to your hips and may help with stomach cramps. Placing a pillow under your legs adds support to your spine while allowing the buttocks to be in that natural cradling positing.

  • DEAL WITH ISSUES

As I said in my previous blog post, dont go to bed mad. Stress or unresloved issues can keep you tossing and turning. Try listening to soothing nusic before bed.which would cause the brain to release a hormone called serotonin and decrease the levels of adrenalin  which helps you to relax. Nurses have found that playing soothing music before bed helped patients with sleep disorders to relax and fall asleep faster.

  • TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE TRYING ANY SLEEP MEDICATION

DO NOT TAKE unprescribed medication
DO NOT TAKE drugs not approved by the FDA
If you are taking herbal teas and supplements ensure that they are in the prescribed quantities
TRY safe non-invasive methods first that have a GOOD TRACK RECORD of working for others. One way to identify this is to look at the testimonials below the advertised products
